World Book Night

L. McMaken
Cincinnati, OH

A project call World Book Night, launched in the UK in 2010 to help introduce reading to those who don’t read or read very little, has become an International program. The idea is simple: “putting a book into another person’s hand and saying ‘this one’s amazing, you have to read it.”

The project is looking for 50,000 volunteers for their 2012 initiative that will be held in the U.S. and the U.K. on April 23, 2012 which is UNESCO’s World Book Day, the anniversary of Cervantes’ death, and the anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth and death.

They are asking each volunteer to hand out 20 books each – “for a total of 1-million free special World Book Night paperbacks!”

World Book Night Volunteers must:
Be aged 16 or older and a resident of the U.S.
Be able to pick up 20 copies of your [selected] book from your local bookshop or library
Be committed to giving your books away on World Book Night to non or light readers
Givers will be chosen based on – where, to whom and why you want to give books away

More detailed information can be found by visiting their website.
