In a unique twist using social media, publisher Harper Collins has created a Facebook app for readers. If a reader sees a book they are interested in, all they have to do is “like” the book on Facbook, and they will be able to read an excerpt from that book. If the book recieves a certain number of “likes”, the publisher will release a longer excerpt.
Publishers’ Weekly said “Harper is supplementing the excerpts by hosting a discussion with fans on Facebook. ‘We’re trying to grow a community and continue the conversation,’ said associate marketing director Katie O’Callaghan. ‘We want the fans engaged, and invested. If they’re participating, and sharing their experience with their friends, then the content will always be fresh and relevant.’”
